JUC is a physical antimicrobial spray dressing developed by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and NMS Technologies. The active ingredient consists of a 2% organosilicon quaternary ammonium salt (QAC) in distilled water. Unlike traditional chemical antibiotics, JUC operates through a physical mechanism; upon application, it forms a stable, positively charged film on the surface of the skin or medical devices. This film exerts an electrostatic force that attracts and ruptures the negatively charged cell walls or membranes of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, leading to their destruction. Registered as a medical dressing product by the U.S. FDA in 2006, JUC is utilized for wound care, hand hygiene, and the prevention of healthcare-associated infections such as catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and MRSA contamination. It has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to compare its bactericidal efficacy against standard alcohol-based hand rubs.
