juniper tar

Juniper tar is a dark brown or yellowish viscous liquid obtained by the destructive distillation of the branches and wood of Juniperus oxycedrus. It contains etheric oils, triterpenes and phenols. Traditionally used in folk medicine and topical preparations for its antipruritic properties in chronic dermatologic disorders such as atopic dermatitis and seborrhea. It has also been used externally for superficial wounds and burns[1][3][5]. Juniper tar is considered toxic if ingested or applied inappropriately; poisoning can result in fever, hypotension, renal failure and hepatotoxicity[4]. Its mechanism of action is not well defined but it acts as a topical antipruritic.
