juniperus scopulorum pollen extract

Juniperus scopulorum pollen extract is a non-standardized allergenic biologic derived from the pollen of the Rocky Mountain juniper tree. It is indicated for the skin test diagnosis of patients with a clinical history of allergy to juniper pollen and for use in allergen immunotherapy. In diagnostic applications, the extract is used to elicit a wheal-and-flare response in sensitive individuals by cross-linking allergen-specific IgE on mast cells. For therapeutic use, it is administered subcutaneously in increasing doses to induce immunological tolerance, typically characterized by a shift from a Th2-dominated allergic response to a Th1/Treg-mediated response, thereby reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. The product has been available in the United States since the 1960s and is produced by several specialized manufacturers of allergenic extracts.
