Drug intelligence / Profile preview
JUUL Virginia Tobacco e-cigarette aerosol is a nicotine-containing inhalation product developed and marketed by JUUL Labs. It is a closed, cartridge-based nicotine delivery system that uses proprietary heating technology to aerosolize a liquid containing nicotine salts (protonated nicotine), propylene glycol, glycerin, and tobacco flavorings. The use of nicotine salts, rather than freebase nicotine, is intended to reduce aerosol harshness and improve the efficiency of nicotine delivery to the user. The product is available in 3% and 5% nicotine concentrations (approximately 30 mg/mL and 59 mg/mL). While regulated by the FDA as a tobacco product under the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) pathway, it is marketed to adult smokers as a potentially less harmful alternative to combustible cigarettes. The primary biological target of the nicotine component is the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). Recent research has explored its effects on lung immune responses, suggesting potential suppression of Th2 pathway activity in models of inflammatory airway disease.
