JuvaVax Influenza A is an experimental vaccine candidate that combines influenza A viral antigens with the proprietary JuvaVax adjuvant system. Developed by Juvaris BioTherapeutics, the JuvaVax adjuvant (also known as JVRS-100) is a cationic lipid-DNA complex (CLDC) composed of cationic liposomes and non-coding plasmid DNA. The mechanism of action involves the stimulation of the innate immune system, specifically through the activation of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) by the DNA component. This activation triggers a robust Th1-biased immune response, enhancing both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) immunity. The technology was designed to provide broader protection against divergent influenza strains and to allow for dose-sparing, which is critical for pandemic preparedness. In 2007, the project received significant funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for research into seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccines, though the specific program is no longer in active development.
