Juvederm Ultra XC is an injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler formulated with lidocaine to enhance patient comfort during administration. Developed by Allergan (now part of AbbVie), it consists of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (24 mg/mL) produced via bacterial fermentation from *Streptococcus equi* and cross-linked using 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE). The product is FDA-approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, and for lip augmentation in adults over the age of 21. Its mechanism of action involves the physical restoration of volume to the dermis or submucosal tissue, where the hyaluronic acid binds water to provide structural support and hydration. In clinical research contexts, such as those led by DeNova Research, it has been specifically evaluated for lip augmentation in diverse populations, including women with Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI.
