Overview
Juzentaihoto (TJ-48) is a traditional Japanese Kampo medicine consisting of a standardized extract of ten medicinal herbs. It is widely prescribed in Japan as an ethical pharmaceutical for the treatment of anemia, fatigue, loss of appetite, and recovery from illness or surgery. The formula is recognized for its potent immunomodulatory, hematopoietic, and anti-tumor properties. It is frequently used as an adjuvant therapy in oncology to mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, enhance immune function, and improve the quality of life. Mechanistically, it is thought to stimulate the reticuloendothelial system, activate macrophages and natural killer cells, and modulate the production of various cytokines such as interleukin-12 and interferon-gamma. In recent clinical research, it is being evaluated for its ability to improve the completion rate and reduce the toxicity of intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.
