Overview

JZP-8 is an investigational once-nightly formulation of sodium oxybate developed by Jazz Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of narcolepsy. Sodium oxybate, the sodium salt of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), is a central nervous system depressant that acts as an agonist at GABA-B receptors and GHB-specific receptors. While the standard treatment for narcolepsy, Xyrem, requires two nightly doses due to its short half-life, JZP-8 was engineered to provide sustained therapeutic levels throughout the night with a single bedtime administration. This once-nightly dosing regimen was intended to improve patient compliance and eliminate the need for patients to wake up in the middle of the night for a second dose. Development of JZP-8 was eventually superseded by other once-nightly candidates in the Jazz Pharmaceuticals pipeline, such as JZP-324.
