K-133W

K-133W is an investigational oral combination therapy being developed by Kowa Co., Ltd. for the treatment of dysmenorrhea. It is a fixed-dose combination of drospirenone, a fourth-generation progestin with anti-mineralocorticoid and anti-androgenic activities, and ethinyl estradiol betadex, a synthetic estrogen. The drug is uniquely formulated as a chewable tablet, designed to improve patient convenience and adherence compared to traditional swallowable tablets. K-133W works by suppressing the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, thereby inhibiting ovulation and reducing the proliferation of the endometrium. This leads to a decrease in the synthesis of prostaglandins in the uterus, which are the primary mediators of menstrual cramps and pain. The product is currently in Phase 3 clinical development in Japan.
