K37 is a specific strain of Lactobacillus plantarum developed by Bened Biomedical, a Taiwan-based company specializing in psychobiotic and probiotic research. It is primarily investigated for its immunomodulatory properties, specifically for the management of asthma and allergic responses. K37 functions by alleviating airway hyper-responsiveness and regulating T-helper cell immune reactions, specifically by strengthening Type 1 (Th1) and attenuating Type 2 (Th2) responses. Mechanistically, it has been shown to reduce serum levels of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and modulate the expression of B-cells, T-cells, and pattern recognition receptors including Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 1 (NOD-1), and Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein 2 (NOD-2). The strain is effective in both its live and heat-killed forms, positioning it as a versatile microbial therapy for immune-mediated inflammatory conditions.
