K8 Implant is a sustained-release intravitreal implant containing a small molecule inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome, developed by Inflammasome Therapeutics. It is currently in clinical development for the treatment of Geographic Atrophy (GA), the advanced stage of dry age-related macular degeneration. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation, which subsequently prevents the production and activity of the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin-18 (IL-18). By targeting these pathways, the K8 Implant aims to reduce the chronic neuroinflammation and retinal pigment epithelial cell death associated with GA progression.
