Kabiven

Kabiven is a sterile, hypertonic emulsion for intravenous infusion, provided in a specialized three-chamber bag system designed for parenteral nutrition (PN). Developed by Fresenius Kabi, it is indicated as a source of calories, protein (amino acids), electrolytes, and essential fatty acids for adult patients when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient, or contraindicated. The three-chamber bag allows for the separate storage of an amino acid solution with electrolytes, a dextrose solution, and a lipid emulsion (specifically Intralipid, a soybean oil-based emulsion), which are mixed just prior to administration. This formulation helps prevent essential fatty acid deficiency and treats negative nitrogen balance. While primarily used in adults, clinical investigations have explored its safety and efficacy in pediatric populations aged 2 to 16 years.
