Kadsura coccinea roots ethanol extract is an ethanol-based extract derived from the roots of the Kadsura coccinea plant, traditionally used in Chinese and Tujia ethnomedicine, notably under the name "Heilaohu". The extract contains diverse natural products, primarily lignans and terpenoids, with a range of biological activities demonstrated in preclinical studies, including hepatoprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and lipid-lowering properties. Mechanistic studies in mouse models and cell cultures show hepatoprotective effects against acetaminophen-induced liver injury, reduction of lipid accumulation in steatotic hepatocytes, and antioxidant activity. The extract’s action is thought to involve the mitigation of oxidative stress, modulation of apoptosis-related pathways, and improvement of lipid metabolism, with triterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, and dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans identified as major bioactive constituents. While the precise molecular targets are not fully established, preliminary evidence suggests modulation of oxidative stress pathways and possible impacts on hepatic and inflammatory signaling. Its use is currently experimental and limited to in vitro and animal research.
