Overview
Kagocel is a synthetic small molecule antiviral and immunomodulatory drug used primarily for the prevention and treatment of acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI), including influenza, in adults and children from 3 years of age, as well as for the treatment of herpes in adults. It acts as an inducer of interferon synthesis, stimulating the production of type I and II interferons that are harmful to viruses. Kagocel is a copolymer derived from carboxymethylcellulose and gossypol, with gossypol covalently bound to reduce toxicity. The drug was developed at the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology and is marketed by Nearmedic in Russia and some CIS countries. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing illness duration, risk of complications, and incidence when used prophylactically[1][4][6][7].
