Overview
Kangxian Yanshen Formula is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) empirical formula developed for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD), specifically stages 3–4. It is composed of several herbal ingredients including *Astragali radix* (Huang Qi), *Chuanxiong Rhizoma* (Chuanxiong), *Curcuma zedoaria*, *Cicada flower*, and *Mantidis ootheca* (Sangpiaoxiao). The formula is designed to benefit qi, tonify the kidneys, and activate blood circulation. Mechanistically, it is associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties. Specifically, active components in *Radix Astragali* are noted for scavenging free radicals and inhibiting tissue fibrogenesis. Clinical studies indicate that the formula significantly delays the deterioration of renal function, as measured by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and reduces the risk of a 30% decline in eGFR over a 36-month period when used as an adjunct to conventional Western medicine.
