Overview
Kanuka Oil Serum is a topical investigational botanical drug developed by Hikurangi Bioactives Limited Partnership (HBLP) for the treatment of acne vulgaris. The active ingredient is kānuka oil (at a 3% concentration), a natural essential oil extracted from the kānuka tree (*Kunzea ericoides*), which is native to New Zealand and has a history of traditional use in Rongoā Māori (Māori traditional healing) for inflammatory conditions. The serum's proposed mechanism of action is based on the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of kānuka oil, which are thought to help address the symptoms of acne. Key chemical markers of kānuka oil include α-pinene and viridiflorol. The drug is being evaluated in a Phase 2 double-blind randomized vehicle-controlled trial in New Zealand, where it is applied topically twice daily for 12 weeks in adults with acne vulgaris.
