Overview

Kaolin is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminum silicate mineral commonly known as "china clay." Medically and pharmaceutically, it has been used primarily as an adsorbent antidiarrheal agent. Kaolin works by binding to and trapping bacteria and their toxins in the gastrointestinal tract; it also binds water in the gut to help firm stools. Historically used for diarrhea (including AIDS-related diarrhea), upset stomach, and as a traditional medicine in various regions such as China, South America, and Africa. Topically, kaolin has been applied as an emollient or drying agent for skin conditions like poison ivy/oak/sumac lesions and diaper rash. Its use for oral mucositis (mouth sores from radiation) is also documented. However, regulatory changes have limited its inclusion in over-the-counter antidiarrheal products due to insufficient evidence of efficacy[1][2][3][4][5][7].
