Overview

Karanjin is a naturally occurring furanoflavonol, a type of benzofuran flavonoid, primarily isolated from the seeds of the karanja tree (Millettia pinnata, also called Pongamia glabra)[1][2][3][8][9]. It is used mainly as a bioinsecticide and acaricide in agriculture, but also studied for multiple biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcerogenic, antimicrobial, hypoglycemic, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties[1][2][4][5]. Pharmacological studies report its effects as a H+, K+-ATPase inhibitor (anti-ulcer activity), lipoxygenase inhibitor (anti-inflammatory activity), GLUT4 translocation stimulator (potential anti-diabetic action), and promoter of cancer cell apoptosis[1][2][4][5]. The compound is recognized in traditional Indian medicine, including Ayurveda and Siddha systems, for a range of ailments such as bronchitis, fever, arthritis, skin diseases, and gastrointestinal disorders, though it has not been developed as a pharmaceutical drug and does not have regulated medical indications[1][2][7].
