Overview

KART (KLSMC Articular Regeneration Technology) is an investigational autologous cell therapy developed by the Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC) for the treatment of articular cartilage disorders of the knee, specifically International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) grade 3 and 4 chondral lesions. The therapy consists of a combination of autologous peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) and hyaluronic acid (HA). The clinical protocol involves an initial arthroscopic subchondral drilling surgery to prepare the lesion site, followed by a series of five weekly intra-articular injections of the PBSC and HA mixture starting one week post-operatively. Additional booster injections are typically administered at six-month intervals. The stem cells are harvested from the patient's own peripheral blood after mobilization. This regenerative approach aims to facilitate the repair and regeneration of hyaline-like cartilage in the joint, where the hyaluronic acid acts as both a lubricant and a scaffold for the progenitor cells.
