Overview
Kehuang capsule is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by Peking University First Hospital for the treatment of liver fibrosis, particularly in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The capsule is a combination of chitosan, a polysaccharide derived from crustacean shells, and Curcuma longa (turmeric) extract. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and the reduction of extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, which are key drivers of fibrogenesis. By modulating inflammatory pathways and oxidative stress, Kehuang capsule aims to arrest or reverse the progression of liver scarring in patients with chronic liver disease. It is currently being evaluated in multicenter clinical trials in China to assess its efficacy in improving liver histology and non-invasive markers of fibrosis.
