KEL-01 is a research-stage small molecule glycopeptide developed by Sirona Biochem for the prevention and reduction of keloid scars. Developed using a proprietary carbohydrate stabilization platform, the compound functions by modulating the extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis in fibroblasts. KEL-01 has been shown to downregulate the expression of genes for collagen I, collagen III, and elastin, while simultaneously upregulating the expression of matrix metalloproteinases MMP1 and MMP3. This mechanism aims to normalize the collagen I/III ratio in keloid fibroblasts to match that of normal fibroblasts, potentially inhibiting the formation of excessive scar tissue. The compound was presented at scientific conferences in 2017, including the 76th Annual Society of Investigative Dermatology Meeting.
