Overview

Kelulut honey is a type of honey produced by stingless bees of the Trigona species, traditionally used in Southeast Asia for various medicinal purposes. [2, 10] It is being clinically investigated by Universiti Sains Malaysia for its therapeutic potential in ophthalmology. Studies are evaluating an oral formulation as a supplementary therapy for juvenile open-angle glaucoma, assessing its effects on inflammatory markers like Interleukin-6 (IL-6), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, and dry eye symptoms. Additionally, sterile ophthalmic eyedrop formulations of Kelulut honey (in 12.5%, 25%, and 50% concentrations) are being studied for safety and efficacy in treating dry eye disease. Research suggests Kelulut honey possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which are attributed to its unique composition of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and other bioactive molecules.
