Kerasol is a topical keratolytic combination therapy used primarily in the treatment of hyperkeratotic and dry skin conditions. Its formulation typically involves a synergistic blend of salicylic acid with either urea or lactic acid, depending on the regional manufacturer. Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid, acts by increasing skin moisture and facilitating the dissolution of the intercellular cement (corneodesmosomes) that binds keratinocytes in the stratum corneum, thereby promoting the shedding of dead skin cells. Urea and lactic acid function as potent humectants, enhancing the skin's water-binding capacity and further softening the keratin matrix. This dual action is particularly effective for managing chronic dermatological conditions such as plaque psoriasis, ichthyosis, keratosis pilaris, and various forms of warts and calluses, where it helps to reduce plaque thickness and improve overall skin texture.
