Overview

Kerodex is a brand of barrier creams and skin protectants originally developed by Ayerst Laboratories (now part of Pfizer). The product line is designed to protect the skin from various industrial and domestic irritants, with specific formulations tailored for different types of exposure. Kerodex 51 is a water-miscible cream intended for protection against non-aqueous substances like oils, greases, and solvents, while Kerodex 71 is a water-repellent cream designed to shield the skin from aqueous solutions such as acids, alkalis, and detergents. In clinical research, Kerodex has been studied for its effects on skin mechanics, specifically its ability to increase the distensibility and plasticity of both normal and atopic skin, although it is generally characterized as a low-lipid moisturizer compared to heavier occlusives like petrolatum. It is primarily indicated for the prevention and management of contact dermatitis and dry skin conditions.
