Kesuting syrup (咳速停糖浆) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed and manufactured by Guizhou Bailing Group Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. [2, 23] It is approved in China for indications rooted in both traditional Miao and Chinese medicine, primarily to "replenish qi and nourish yin, moisten the lungs to stop cough, and benefit the stomach to promote fluid production." [4, 8, 10] Clinically, it is used for cough, dry throat, sputum, and asthma associated with colds and chronic bronchitis. [4, 8] The syrup is a combination of nine herbs: Reineckea carnea (Jixiangcao), Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing), Cynanchum otophyllum (Báiwěishēn), Platycodon grandiflorus (Jiegeng), Saxifraga stolonifera (Huercao), Eriobotrya japonica leaf (Pipaye), Ephedra sinica (Mahuang), Morus alba bark (Sangbaipi), and Papaver pericarpium (Yingsuke). [1, 3, 7, 19] Due to the inclusion of Ephedra, which contains ephedrine, and Papaver pericarpium (poppy husk), which contains alkaloids like morphine, its use is cautioned, particularly for athletes, and it is prohibited in children, pregnant women, and lactating women. [2, 3, 7, 17] Pharmacological studies suggest it has antitussive, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-enhancing effects. [2] Recently, Kesuting syrup has been investigated in clinical trials for its potential efficacy in treating mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19, such as cough and sore throat. [1] Network pharmacology studies have proposed that active compounds like Rutin, found in Ephedra and Morus alba bark, may exert an anti-SARS-CoV-2 effect by modulating targets like Interferon-gamma (IFNG).
