Overview

Ketazolam (marketed under the brand name Ansietil, among others) is a long-acting benzodiazepine derivative with anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties. Originally developed by Upjohn, ketazolam acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor complex in the central nervous system. By binding to the benzodiazepine site, it enhances GABA-mediated chloride ion conductance, leading to hyperpolarization and reduced neuronal excitability. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of pathological anxiety states, tension, irritability, and muscle spasticity.
