Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ketoanalogue amino acids (commonly marketed under the brand name Ketosteril) is a nutritional therapy and prescription drug product containing a mixture of essential amino acids and their corresponding nitrogen-free alpha-keto and alpha-hydroxy analogues. It is primarily used in combination with a protein-restricted diet (low-protein or very low-protein diet) to treat and delay the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the pre-dialysis phase. Following oral administration, the keto- and hydroxy-analogues are transaminated into their corresponding essential amino acids by utilizing endogenous nitrogen from non-essential amino acids (such as urea), thereby reducing the production and accumulation of toxic nitrogenous waste products (uremic toxins) while maintaining nutritional status and preventing protein-energy wasting.
