Ketocol

Ketocol is a topical lotion formulation of the azole antifungal ketoconazole, developed by the UK-based dermatology company Dermal Laboratories. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of scalp conditions, including seborrhoeic dermatitis and pityriasis capitis (dandruff). The active ingredient, ketoconazole, exerts its antifungal effect by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51A1). This inhibition blocks the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to structural and functional impairment of the membrane and subsequent fungal cell death. Ketocol has been evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials (e.g., EudraCT 2004-001414-28) to demonstrate its efficacy and safety compared to standard treatments like Nizoral Shampoo and placebo in adult patients.
