Overview

Ketofen is a veterinary formulation of ketoprofen, a propionic acid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used primarily in horses and cattle to alleviate inflammation, pain, and fever associated with musculoskeletal disorders and infectious diseases. It exerts analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects by reversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxane that mediate pain, inflammation, and pyrexia.[1][4][9][14] In horses it is indicated for musculoskeletal pain and inflammation, including lameness and osteoarthritis, while in cattle it is used for control of fever associated with bovine respiratory disease and other inflammatory conditions, administered as a sterile injectable solution typically by intravenous route for short-term treatment.[1][2][6][10][12][14]
