ketoprofen (Kowa Company, Ltd.)

K-103-IP is a transdermal patch formulation of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ketoprofen, developed by Kowa Company. It was designed to provide localized relief for acute pain, specifically targeting conditions such as ankle strains and sprains. The patch delivery system aims to provide sustained therapeutic levels of ketoprofen at the site of injury while minimizing systemic exposure and associated gastrointestinal side effects. Ketoprofen's mechanism of action involves the non-selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the production of prostaglandins that mediate pain and inflammation. Although K-103-IP reached Phase 2/3 clinical trials in the United States for the treatment of acute pain from ankle sprains, the development program was terminated by the sponsor in 2014 for business reasons.
