Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid class that exerts its therapeutic effects by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This inhibition prevents the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are key mediators of pain and inflammation. In a clinical study conducted by Yonsei University, a transdermal ketoprofen patch was investigated for the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) in the upper trapezius muscle. The patch formulation allows for localized delivery of the medication to the affected musculoskeletal tissues, potentially reducing the risk of systemic gastrointestinal and renal side effects typically associated with oral NSAIDs. The research evaluated the patch as a monotherapy and in combination with other modalities such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and heat therapy.
