Ketosteril is a pharmaceutical preparation containing alpha-keto analogues of essential amino acids and specific essential amino acids, primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of damages due to faulty or deficient protein metabolism in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Developed by Fresenius Kabi, it is intended for use in conjunction with a protein-restricted diet (low-protein or very-low-protein diet). The drug works by providing the carbon skeletons of essential amino acids; these keto acids are transaminated in the body into their corresponding amino acids by utilizing nitrogen from endogenous non-protein sources, such as urea. This metabolic process helps to reduce the production and accumulation of nitrogenous waste products and uremic toxins, thereby slowing the progression of renal failure, delaying the initiation of dialysis, and preventing protein-energy wasting while maintaining nutritional status.
