Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ketotifen hydrogen fumarate is a second-generation H1-antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. It exerts its therapeutic effect through a multi-pronged mechanism: it acts as a potent, non-competitive antagonist at histamine H1 receptors, stabilizes mast cells to prevent the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes, and inhibits the chemotaxis and activation of eosinophils. This profile allows for both rapid relief of ocular itching and long-term suppression of the allergic response. While originally developed by Novartis, it is produced by various manufacturers including Genetic S.p.A., which provides ophthalmic solutions for the management of ocular allergies.
