KGF-HS

KGF-HS is an investigational topical serum formulation of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) developed by the University of Arizona. KGF is a cytoprotective cytokine that specifically targets epithelial cells by binding to the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2b (FGFR2b). The drug was developed as a prophylactic treatment for chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA), particularly in breast cancer patients receiving taxane- or anthracycline-based regimens. The therapeutic hypothesis was that topical application of KGF to the scalp would protect hair follicle keratinocytes from the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy, thereby preventing hair loss. However, a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT04554732) concluded that KGF-HS did not effectively prevent alopecia in the study population compared to standard care.
