KH656 is an innovative small molecule drug candidate developed by Chengdu Kanghong Biotech for the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Unlike the company's established biologic product Conbercept, KH656 is a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) designed to target the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) signaling pathway. By inhibiting VEGFR, the drug aims to suppress the pathological angiogenesis and vascular leakage that drive the progression of 'wet' AMD. Small molecule TKIs are being investigated in the ophthalmic space for their potential to offer more durable therapeutic effects and compatible delivery through sustained-release formulations, which could significantly reduce the frequency of intravitreal injections required by patients.
