Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) refers to the seeds of the common bean plant, which are widely consumed and studied for their potential health benefits. Various forms, including whole beans, white kidney bean extract, and red kidney bean anthocyanins, are investigated for their therapeutic properties. Its mechanisms of action include the suppression of starch digestion, modulation of the gut microbiome, and inhibition of xanthine oxidase (XOD). It is also known to modulate urate transporters like URAT1, GLUT9, and OAT3. Kidney bean and its extracts are being explored for applications in glycemia management, weight loss, protein metabolism, bone health, and the alleviation of hyperuricemia. It is considered a nutraceutical due to its food-derived nature and health-promoting effects.
