Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Kigelia africana stem bark extract is a crude botanical preparation derived from the stem bark of *Kigelia africana* (commonly known as the sausage tree). It is a complex, multi-component natural product traditionally used in African folk medicine to treat various ailments, including skin diseases, sores, ulcers, stomach problems, and gynecological complaints. Preclinical research has demonstrated that the extract possesses antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, wound-healing, and antidiabetic properties. Additionally, it has shown cytotoxic activity against several cancer cell lines, including lung adenocarcinoma (A549), breast cancer (HCC 1937), and leukemia models. Active constituents identified within the extract include quinones such as lapachol, 2-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2-acetylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione, and 2-acetylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione. It is currently investigated as a research material and has no established single molecular target or commercial developer.
