Overview
Kiklin (bixalomer) is a non-absorbed, calcium-free, amine-functional polymer developed by Astellas Pharma Inc. for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Originally discovered by Ilypsa (now a subsidiary of Amgen), bixalomer acts as a phosphate binder in the gastrointestinal tract. By binding to dietary phosphate, it inhibits its absorption into the systemic circulation, thereby reducing serum phosphorus levels. It is approved in Japan for use in both dialysis and pre-dialysis CKD patients and is available in capsule and granule formulations.
