Overview

The killed Mycobacterium leprae vaccine is an experimental whole-cell, inactivated bacterial vaccine composed of heat-killed or otherwise inactivated Mycobacterium leprae organisms. It was developed by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and evaluated as part of the Karonga Prevention Trial in northern Malawi. The vaccine was primarily studied in combination with the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine to determine if the addition of killed M. leprae antigens could provide enhanced protection against leprosy and tuberculosis compared to BCG alone or a second dose of BCG. Results from a Phase III randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial indicated that the addition of the killed M. leprae vaccine did not significantly improve protective efficacy over BCG vaccination alone for either leprosy or tuberculosis.
