Overview

Killed Staphylococcus aureus is an experimental biological preparation developed and utilized by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for clinical research into human skin immunity. It consists of inactivated S. aureus bacteria and serves as a standardized antigenic challenge agent. In clinical trial settings, such as the study of Human Immunity Against Staphylococcus Aureus Skin Infection, the preparation is applied topically to induced suction blisters on the skin of healthy volunteers and patients with primary immunodeficiencies like hyper IgE syndrome (HIES). This allows researchers to characterize the localized immune response, including the recruitment of inflammatory cells and the production of cytokines, to identify specific defects in host defense mechanisms against staphylococcal infections.
