Overview

Killed whole cell oral cholera vaccines (kOCVs) are inactivated vaccines containing killed *Vibrio cholerae* bacteria (typically serogroups O1 and O139), administered orally to prevent cholera. These vaccines stimulate the intestinal immune response to limit colonization of *V. cholerae* in the gut following exposure. They are used for both outbreak control and routine immunization in endemic areas and have demonstrated safety and efficacy in multiple clinical trials. Notable formulations include Dukoral (which also contains recombinant B subunit of the cholera toxin), Shanchol, Euvichol, and Euvichol-Plus; all are prequalified by WHO for global use[3][5][6][8]. The primary indication is prevention of disease caused by *Vibrio cholerae*.
