Overview

Kinetin is a naturally occurring cytokinin—a class of plant hormones—that promotes cell division and growth in plants. It was originally isolated as a plant hormone but has since been found in DNA from various organisms including humans. In medicine and cosmetics, kinetin is primarily used topically for its purported anti-aging effects on the skin such as reducing roughness and fine wrinkles; however, clinical evidence supporting these uses is limited[1][2][8]. Potential oral uses include treatment of genetic disorders like familial dysautonomia and certain cancers[2]. Mechanistically in mammalian cells it may act as an antioxidant—protecting DNA from oxidative damage—and can modulate cellular processes by binding to the adenosine receptor (A2a-R)[5][6]. Its precise mechanism of action remains unclear but includes antioxidative activity and possible stimulation of DNA repair pathways[5][6].
