KIO-201 is a chemically modified and cross-linked form of hyaluronic acid developed as a topical ophthalmic therapy to accelerate corneal wound healing. It is designed to provide enhanced shear-thinning properties and increased ocular surface residence time compared to standard hyaluronic acid formulations. KIO-201 acts as a protectant and facilitates re-epithelization of the corneal surface after injury or surgery by forming a thin coating over the eye. The drug is being developed primarily for persistent corneal epithelial defects (PCEDs) and other corneal injuries that are difficult to treat with current therapies[1][2][5][7]. Its mechanism of action involves replacing or supplementing endogenous hyaluronic acid on the ocular surface, thereby supporting tissue homeostasis and wound healing processes[2][5].
