Kisspeptin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone encoded by the KISS1 gene, originally identified for its role in suppressing cancer metastasis (hence the name "metastin"). It acts as a key regulator of reproductive hormone secretion by binding to and activating the G-protein coupled receptor GPR54 (also known as KISS1R). Kisspeptin stimulates gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons in the hypothalamus, which leads to increased secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. These hormones are essential for sexual development, fertility, ovulation, and maintenance of reproductive function in both men and women. Kisspeptin has also been investigated for use in triggering ovulation during assisted reproduction protocols such as IVF, with potential advantages over traditional agents due to a lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Additionally, early clinical trials have explored its use in treating hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), secondary hypogonadism, delayed puberty, and other reproductive disorders. Kisspeptin is not currently approved by regulatory agencies but remains under active investigation[1][2][4][5][6][7][8][9].
