Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**KiteLock** is a 4% tetrasodium EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) sterile catheter lock solution designed to maintain patency and prevent complications in central venous access devices (CVADs) and tunneled central venous catheters (CVCs). It exhibits **non-antibiotic antimicrobial**, **antibiofilm**, and **anticoagulant** properties, chelating essential metal ions like calcium and magnesium to inhibit microbial growth, eradicate biofilms from Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi (including superbugs like MRSA), and prevent thrombus formation without promoting antibiotic resistance. Developed by **SterileCare Inc.**, it is instilled into catheter lumens between uses, primarily for hemodialysis patients at high risk of dysfunction, pediatric intestinal failure patients on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and critical care patients with CVADs. Clinical data demonstrate reductions in catheter-related bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) by up to 100%, occlusions by 33-70%, thrombolytic (r-TPA or alteplase) use by 33%, and CVC exchanges by 11% compared to citrate, saline, or heparin locks. Approved by **Health Canada** (July 2019), with approvals in Europe and Australia (Feb 2020); safe for repeated use including in children, but contraindicated in EDTA hypersensitivity or pregnancy.[1][2][3][4][10]
