Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Klebicin KvarM is a recombinant, plant-expressed bacteriocin (specifically a colicin-like bacteriocin) developed by Nomad Bioscience and its subsidiary Nomads for the treatment and prevention of multidrug-resistant *Klebsiella* infections, including *Klebsiella pneumoniae* gastrointestinal colonization and sepsis. Derived from *Klebsiella variicola*, KvarM is a wide-spectrum bacteriocin that exhibits targeted antimicrobial activity against various *Klebsiella* species, including *K. pneumoniae*, *K. quasipneumoniae*, *K. variicola*, *K. oxytoca*, and *K. aerogenes*. It exerts its antibacterial effect through pore formation and peptidoglycan degradation, selectively targeting pathogenic *Klebsiella* without significantly disrupting the commensal gut microbiota. Klebicin KvarM has been evaluated in preclinical murine models of gastrointestinal tract infection (using a pH-dependent Eudragit-coated oral formulation for targeted release in the small and large intestines) and sepsis (via intravenous administration).
