Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteriophage refers to a class of lytic viruses (bacteriophages) that specifically target and infect the Gram-negative bacterium *Klebsiella pneumoniae*. These phages bind to specific bacterial surface receptors, such as the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), inject their genetic material, and replicate within the host cell, ultimately causing bacterial lysis and death. This targeted approach is being developed as an alternative or adjunct to traditional antibiotic therapy, particularly for combating multidrug-resistant (MDR) and carbapenem-resistant *K. pneumoniae* (CR-Kp) infections. Various academic institutions and biotechnology companies are investigating single phages or multi-phage cocktails for indications such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), urinary tract infections (UTIs), and prosthetic joint infections.
