KLS-0611 is a small molecule P2Y2 receptor agonist being developed by Kissei Pharmaceutical for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. The P2Y2 receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed on the ocular surface, including the conjunctival epithelium and goblet cells. Activation of this receptor by KLS-0611 triggers the release of mucin and electrolytes, which promotes the secretion of water and improves the quality and stability of the tear film. This mechanism is intended to alleviate the symptoms and signs of dry eye by restoring ocular surface homeostasis. The drug is currently in Phase 2 clinical testing in Japan.
