Overview

KM-819 is a first-in-class, small molecule inhibitor of FAS-associated factor 1 (FAF1), developed as a neuroprotective and disease-modifying agent for Parkinson’s disease and multiple system atrophy. By inhibiting FAF1—a key regulatory protein in cell death pathways—KM-819 protects dopaminergic neurons from apoptosis and necrosis, slows or halts the progression of neurodegeneration, and reduces alpha-synuclein accumulation. Preclinical studies demonstrated its efficacy in protecting neuronal cells and improving behavioral outcomes in animal models. Clinical trials have shown an acceptable safety profile in both healthy volunteers and patients with Parkinson’s disease[1][2][3][4][5][6]. The drug was originally developed by Kainos Medicine in collaboration with Chungnam National University and Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology[8].
