Overview

The rabies vaccine developed by the Institute of Poliomyelitis and Viral Encephalitides (Chumakov Institute), commonly known as KOKAV, is a concentrated, purified, inactivated vaccine derived from the Vnukovo-32 strain of the rabies virus. The virus is propagated in primary Syrian hamster kidney cell cultures and subsequently inactivated. This vaccine is indicated for both pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure treatment of rabies, a fatal viral encephalitis transmitted primarily through animal bites. It works by inducing the production of specific neutralizing antibodies that provide immunity against the rabies virus. KOKAV is a primary tool for rabies prevention in the Russian Federation and is exported to numerous countries globally.
